Enough already with the high-tech toothbrushes!

Look - I’m as thrilled as anyone to be living in an era of such swift, constant technological progress. These are extraordinary times, and our quality of life has been enhanced in almost every particular by the diligence and vision of nerds who are dedicated to improving — and, indeed, perfecting — virtually every aspect of contemporary life. Here’s to them (hoist beverage of choice)!

But, quand mème — can we please have done with the continual pointless modification of the the toothbrush? Let’s just all agree that today’s toothbrushes are pretty damned near perfect and move on. A toothbrush is not a nuclear reactor or a sports car; it’s not even a radio or a microwave oven. It is, in fact, a toothbrush. Surely the engineers and designers who’ve been toiling towards the Platonic ideal of a toothbrush have come close enough to that ideal. Their work here is done. They can now move on in good conscience and devote their ingenuity to some other worthy goal. And the rest of us can all get on with brushing our teeth.
